Beyond the Ringstrasse and the Prater, Vienna hides a world of courtyards, cellars and rooftop gardens that most visitors never discover. We found them.
Vienna is a city that rewards patience. Walk past the grand facades of the Ringstrasse, through the tourist-worn lanes of the 1st district, and keep walking — because the city's most extraordinary places are rarely the ones on the map.
We spent three months exploring Vienna's lesser-known corners, speaking with locals, historians and the kind of people who have lived in the same neighbourhood for forty years. What we found was a city within a city — one that most visitors never see.
The Augarten, Vienna's oldest baroque park, is known to most. But few visitors find the ceramic workshop hidden within its grounds, where craftspeople have been producing Augarten porcelain since 1718. The workshop offers tours, but they must be booked weeks in advance.
In the 7th district, a narrow passage between two apartment buildings opens onto a courtyard garden that belongs to no one in particular — or perhaps to everyone. Residents have filled it with plants, a small fountain, and a bench that faces the afternoon sun.
The Naschmarkt's Saturday flea market is well-documented. Less known is the antique dealer at the far end who specialises exclusively in Viennese coffee house memorabilia — menus, sugar tongs, the small silver spoons that once rested on the rim of a Melange.
